The American Dream Embryo Lottery committee kicked off its fundraising effort at the Angus Reception Sunday evening. John Pfeiffer, Orlando, Okla., presents Ticket No. 1 to 2006 American Angus Association President Ben Eggers of Sydenstricker Genetics, Mexico, Mo., as Julie McMahon French, Beaverton, Mich., assists. One thousand lottery tickets will be sold for $100 each to support the operating expenses of the 2007 NJAS. National Junior Angus Association Communications Director Kristen Oaks, Calhoun, La., displays a poster describing “A Feast” available for purchase at Sunday evening’s Angus Reception. The meal for 75 individuals, donated by Arkansas Angus Breeders, was purchased for $8,500 by a syndicate of Angus producers. Proceeds will be used to host the 2007 NJAS.

The American Angus Auxiliary auctioned four embryos donated by Boyd Beef Cattle, Mays Lick, Ky., and Schaffs Angus Valley, Saint Anthony, N.D., to raise funds for the Auxiliary’s scholarship program during the Angus Reception Sunday evening. Cecil McCurry of McCurry Bros., Sedgwick, Kan., purchased two SAV Rosetta 3350 x SAV 8180 Traveler 004 embryos for $1,100 each. Dave McMahon of Belle Point Ranch, Lavaca, Ark., purchased two Boyd Everelda Entense 409 x GAR Predestined embryos for $2,000 each. At the Angus Foundation Supporter Recognition Event Nov. 11, a special presentation was made to Ronald and Myki Simek of Canyon Creek Angus, Cody, Wyo., and Bill and Barb Rishel of Rishel Angus, North Platte, Neb., for reaching the Angus Foundation’s “Angus Leader” level of recognition with support of $250,000-$499,999 or equivalent sale proceeds from a gift-in-kind. Gregg and Lile Blythe of Macedon Angus Farm, Madison, Ala., donated $10,000 in honor of James E. Horton Jr. to establish a youth scholarship endowment. Horton was president of the American Angus Association Board of Directors in 1979 and helped pave the way for the formation of the Angus Foundation the following year. The commitment was one of four announced to a crowd of 300 Angus supporters gathered at the Supporter Recognition Event Nov. 11.

The children the late of Dale and Betty Davis, formerly of Belgrade, Mont., donated $25,000 in honor of their parents to fund research projects through the Angus Foundation. BioZyme Inc., based in Saint Joseph, Mo., and led by President Bob Norton, committed $250,000 to Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus. Norton is pictured with his wife, Lisa. “Through this fundraising effort, the Angus breed will be empowered to continue its prominence in the beef cattle industry,” said Howard Hillman of Bon-View Farms, South Dakota, as he kicked off the Vision of Value: Campaign for Angus during the Angus Foundation Supporter Recognition Event Nov. 11. “Educational programs will grow, youth opportunities will expand and research will advance.” Hillman chairs the leadership cabinet directing that effort.

The CAB Board appointed him, effective immediately, at its meeting Saturday, Nov. 11, during Angus activities at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky. Emily Tennant, Greensboro, N.C., was crowned Miss American Angus by Joann Pipkin, Springfield, Mo., prior to the selection of champion bull Monday, Nov. 13. Pipkin judged the Miss American Angus contest with Jennifer Svoboda (green jacket), Sargent, Neb., and Glen Grote, Calera, Okla.

American Angus Auxiliary officers for the coming year include Sharee Sankey, Council Grove, Kan., advisor; Mary Greiman, Garner, Iowa, president; Nancy Thelen, Saline, Mich., president-elect; and Michelle Rieff, Bentonville, Ark., secretary-treasurer.
