Since 1887 the Zutavern family has been managing cattle along the Dismal River. Thats when George Conrad Zutavern and his son, William G., started summering steers in the Sandhills near the town of Dunning. In 1917 they moved their families to the area and set up headquarters where the ranch is located today.
Today, the fourth and fifth generations of the Zutaverns are producing Angus cattle along the Dismal. Williams grandson Bill and Bills son Shawn are working together to guarantee their familys tradition of raising cattle on these rolling hills.
The Zutaverns manage a 1,700-head spring-calving cow-calf operation. Each year they sell 300-400 bred heifers.
In 1995 the Zutaverns hosted more than 3,200 people at the Cattle Barons Ball. The annual event, hosted by the Nebraska beef industry, is held at various ranches throughout the state to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
