Summitcrest, Broken Bow


Here’s an aerial view of the Summitcrest facility
during their spring bull sale.

Fred Johnson Sr. established the Summitcrest herd in Summitville, Ohio, in 1938. Summitcrest, under the general management of Henry Bergfeld, maintains its other ranches at the home unit of Summitville and also Fremont, Iowa. In 1974 Fred Johnson Jr. started the third unit at Broken Bow as a move toward western expansion, bringing Summitcrest closer to the commercial cattle industry and providing a stronger bull market.
Today, sons Sam and Jeff Johnson and their families are involved in the operation, which strives for balanced traits in the production of Angus cattle to fit their customers’ needs. More than 500 bulls are marketed annually from all three ranch units.
Jeff Johnson is ranch manager at Broken Bow, which includes approximately 16,000 acres with 750 registered and commercial cows. In addition to the cow herds, the ranch has an on-site feedlot and bull-testing facility.
Summitcrest has been honored as the 1998 NCBA Region I Beef Business of the Century and the 1991 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Seedstock Producer of the Year. The ranch received the CAB Commitment to Excellence Award in 1992.

Slagle Angus, Sargent, is a registered Angus herd that emphasizes producing high-growth, high-performance cattle for Nebraska’s top commercial producers. Mark and Kristin Slagle own this 500-cow herd, which operates on 6,000 acres of owned and leased land. Todd and Sandy Bitterman are also share partners in the herd.
The ranch was founded in 1962 and has included registered Angus since 1976. Artificial insemination (AI) has been used since the beginning, breeding to sires both inside and outside of the herd, allowing for improvement of the performance, maternal and carcass quality of the cow herd. Providing seedstock that enable their customers to be more profitable has always been a primary goal for this family-owned Angus operation.
